The History & Antiquities of St Davids

W B Jones and E A Freeman

Published in 1856, this comprehensive description of St Davids Cathedral and its environs is an outstanding example of Victorian scholarship.  The authors were men of great learning and industry: Basil Jones was Bishop of St Davids from 1874 to 1897; Edward Freeman became Regius Professor of Modern History at Oxford in 1884.

This facsimile edition was first published in 1998 and includes a Foreword by the then Dean of St Davids, Wyn Evans, who served as Bishop of St Davids from 2008 to 2016.

The book contains the original black and white drawings and plans made by Jones and Freeman.

A must for everyone who wants to delve deeper into the archaeological, architectural and ecclesiastical history of St Davids Cathedral.

Note: this book does not include the restoration works carried out by George Gilbert Scott at the end of the 19th century: Scott freely acknowledged how much his restoration plan was guided by the content of this book.
